Chart of 1992

This was the year of the least number 1's. Only twelve songs got to the top spot in 1992. Every song that made it to number 1 stayed there for a minimum of 2 weeks.

Take That - Could It Be Magic?

The first taste of the top five for Take That with a Barry Manilow cover. I guess no other introduction is needed to this, except to mention how homoerotic the video is!

Felix - Don't You Want Me?

Another huge club hit from a Dutch rave-eurodance act. Unfortunately I can't find a vid of the whole song.

Freddie Mercury & Montserrat Caballé - Barcelona

A re-release of a collaboration that took place in 1987, this was adopted by the Spanish Olympic Committee for the 1992 Barcelona XXV Summer Olympiad. It spent 8 weeks at number 2 in the UK.

Shanice - I Love Your Smile

The biggest hit of the American R&B singer. The video version edits out the rap part during the bridge. Janet Jackson also laughs at the end of the song!

Dr Alban - It's My Life

Another eurodance act, this time with a reggae style, from a Nigerian born guy living in Sweden. This was his biggest hit, but he features on a Sash! single called Colour The World

Tasmin Archer - Sleeping Satellite

Breakthrough smash hit for the Yorkshire singer with a soulful voice. Sadly, follow up singles failed to emulate the success of this, which remains one of my favourite songs of all time.

Shamen - Ebeneezer Goode

"E's are good, e's are good!!" The biggest hit for the Scottish group. It sort of charecterizes the whole rave scene going on at the time and it spent 4 weeks at the top of the chart, bizarrely during the BBC's Drug Awareness Week! Despite the gimmicky nature of the lyrics, it's an absolutely wicked tune.

Undercover - Baker Street

The British dance act scored a number 2 hit in the UK with a fantastic remix of this Stealers Wheel classic. Amazingly I think it still sounds fresh today.

Erasure - ABBA-esque [EP]

The camp boys with a fetish for synth pop released an EP of 4 ABBA tracks this year, which spent 5 weeks at the top of the UK charts and stayed at number 2 in Germany for even longer. In the USA it only charted at 51, but the song Take A Chance On Me did get significant airplay. Here's the vid for Lay All Your Love On Me, which is the first song on the EP.

KWS - Please Don't Go

KWS were a dance act from the East Midlands, but despite being nimonated for a BRIT Award, this was their one and only hit, but it still got to number 1 for five weeks in May of this year.

Shakespeare's Sister - Stay

This got to number 1 in the UK and Ireland, but the video was banned in Germany for its scenes of witchcraft! None of their follow up singles repeated the success of this song from the group that takes their name from a song title by The Smiths.

Charles & Eddie - Would I Lie To You?

Charles and Eddie met on a train and began performing soul music together. This was their only hit, but was the third biggest selling song of 1992.

Snap! - Rhythm Is A Dancer

Huge dance anthem from the German dance act that employed actors to take their place at live appearances because of people's preconceived ideas about the German music scene! This tune is still played in clubs today and was the second biggest selling single of 1992.

Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You

But this cover of a Dolly Parton classic was the biggest selling single of 1992 and it was the only one to sell over a million copies in this year. It charted in November 1992 and stayed at number 1 until mid-February 1993. It was also the third year in a row that a song from a film soundtrack was the biggest single of the year. Whitney was, of course, releasing this on the back of the blockbuster love story The Bodyguard.
